Secret Path Week October 17-22, 2022 & Walk for Wenjack

Dear Wilshire Families,

Inspired by Chanie Wenjack’s story and Gord Downie’s call to build a better Canada, the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund aims to build cultural understanding and create a path toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

Secret Path Week is an annual, national movement commemorating the legacies of Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack.  The aim is to inspire Legacy Schools, and all Canadians, to use the week of October 17-22 to answer the call to action to “Do Something” by creating and engaging in reconciliACTIONS.  The week raises awareness of the history and continued trauma caused by residential schools.

The Legacy Schools program, of which Wilshire E.S. is proud to be a part of, is a national initiative to engage, inspire and empower Indigenous and non-Indigenous educators, staff and students to take part in reconciliation everywhere in Canada.

As part of our commitment in being a Legacy School, we are proud to announce that our school will be participating in a Walk for Wenjack on Thursday, October 20.  Our kindergarten and primary students will have the opportunity to walk around our school property, while our junior and intermediate students will take a short walk through the neighbourhood.  The purpose of the Walk for Wenjack is to honour the life and legacy of Chanie Wenjack as well as to raise awareness of residential schools.

It is through reconciliACTIONS such as the Walk for Wenjack, as well as the necessary ongoing learning about the residential school system that happens throughout the year, that we can truly move reconciliation forward.

We encourage you to learn more about the Downie Wenjack Fund and our work as a Legacy School by visiting their website: https://downiewenjack.ca/

Or, visit our fundraising page to make a donation to the Downie Wenjack Fund.

School Start-Up Forms

Families are asked to complete some important forms online, if you haven’t already done so.

Please complete and submit these online School Start-Up Forms through your child’s YRDSB Google account.

  • You can access your child’s YRDSB Google account via a web browser. For best results, use a computer rather than a mobile phone.
  • The username is your child’s YRDSB Student Number. Your child will receive their login information from the school at the start of the year. If you or your child do not know the password to log in to their Google account, please contact your child’s teacher or the school office.
  • Frequently asked questions and additional information on how to complete the forms are available on the Board website under Family Resources (click on the “Need Help” link for Family Start-Up Forms.
  • Available in 14 different languages

It is important that these forms are completed as soon as possible at the start of the school year. There are both mandatory and optional forms. The forms are to be completed for all students, whether they are attending school in person or participating in remote, online learning. Your child’s school will access the information.

Please complete a separate form for each child attending our schools.

Thank you.
