What an incredible week of learning and fun at Wilshire ES! Please review important information from this week and our upcoming days together.
TERRY FOX WALK
In 1980, Terry’s journey to raise money for cancer research began and he called it the Marathon of Hope. With fierce determination and hope, Terry completed an average of 42 km each day, every day for 143 days. He ran a total of 5,373 km. On Wednesday the sun was shining, and Wilshire ES “Tried Like Terry” by walking through the community to show our support. Thank you to all our families, students and staff for raising over $2300. This is the 28th year Wilshire ES has participated in the Terry Fox Walk/Run – and we couldn’t do it without you. If you still wish to donate, please go to terryfoxschoolrun.org!
ORANGE SHIRT DAY – NATIONAL DAY OF TRUTH & RECONCILIATION
On Friday, the outdoors became our classroom as we recognized and reflected upon the Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. The colour of the shirt is connected to the experience of a little girl named Phyllis Webstad, who was sent to a residential school. On her first day of school she was dressed in a brand new orange shirt, bought for her by her grandmother. When she arrived at the school, this shirt was taken away and she was forced to wear the school uniform instead. This is a day for all people in Canada to come together in the spirit of truth and reconciliation. It is a day to honour residential school students and to remind us all that every child matters.
