This morning, we have a special event happening at Wilshire. Mrs. Byrne, our wonderful Teacher-Librarian, has developed a partnership with the Downie Wenjack Foundation over the last couple of years. This is the foundation started by Gord Downie of the famous Canadian band, The Tragically Hip, to build cultural understanding and reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in Canada. Wilshire is now a Legacy school with the Downie Wenjack Foundation. Our students have done a lot of work with the graphic novel “The Secret Path” that was accompanied by an album written by Downie to tell the story of Chanie Wenjack, a boy who died after escaping his residential school.
Wilshire has been chosen as one of 6 Legacy schools in the province, and the only one in YRDSB, to have a special live interactive video session with Mike Downie, Gord’s brother, today. Students will have a chance to ask questions and learn more about Gord Downie’s legacy and his efforts to ensure that the unique rights, interests and perspectives of Indigenous people across Canada are recognized. The interactive session will be livestreamed on You Tube at 9:30 this morning at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvQkEzcH9f_9OylEdmALiWg/videos so you are welcome to follow along at home!
