Cold Weather and School

As the cold weather has returned, I want to remind you that students are expected to go outside at recesses during the school day.  It is important for children’s physical and mental health that they have a chance to go outside and play with their peers during the day.  Our morning recess is 20 minutes and our lunch recess is 40 minutes. Therefore, they must be dressed for the weather.  When the cold weather comes, students should have warm coats, hats, mittens or gloves and boots.  It is advisable for students to bring extra pants and socks. A change is often necessary due to the wet and cold weather of the winter months. To avoid adding to the clothing collection in the Lost and Found, please label all articles of clothing with your child’s name.

As per the YRDSB guidelines, when temperatures and/or wind chill reach minus 20 degrees Celsius, we will implement indoor recesses.  When temperatures and/or wind chill reach minus 18-19 degrees Celsius, we will consider a shortened outdoor time for the lunch recess. Before school, staff are not on duty until 8:40.  Please do not send your children to school before 8:40 as there is no one to supervise them or bring them in if the weather is too cold.

Students with health concerns, such as, but not limited to, heavy colds, coughs and flu,
which are serious enough to prevent them from participating in physical education,
recesses or other outdoor activities, should remain at home until the condition improves.

Thank you for your assistance in helping our students to have a safe and healthy winter season!
